I can never understand when people come to the shelter or anywhere and pass by all the dogs there because they are looking for a color or size or hair length. Maybe I'm just not a human because that doesn't make any sense to me at all.
I don't want a long haired dog or cat. I just don't like all the brushing. That being said everytime I pass Bon Jovi's little fru fru looking body and he tries to throw himself in my arms because he loves me, I wish I could adopt Bon Jovi. No, I don't think he's the most attractive dog in the shelter but man he is a great dog to me. Three of my cats are long hair. I have to brush them every day. Their mom died on their first day and they became mine. It doesn't matter that they don't match the picture in the kitten calendar that I or someone else thinks is the cutest, they are the most wonderful cats in the world.
I don't understand why pets are chosen on appearance instead of traits and personality. Purebred doesn't mean anything to me because as much as people talk about breed standard temperment and junk like that it just doesn't apply to so many dogs and cats that are purebred. There are clingy, independent, aloof, kissup, haughty, grovelling, possessive and the range of actions in all breeds depending on the pet.
It drives me nuts. All people are different. That is for sure because I would never be able to choose a pet from a photo. Only from it's circumstances and needs and from it's personality

thank you everyone for your help... I realize that i was very hasty in this decision.. I was mostly looking for a white german shepherd. the fact that this dog was half husky was a plus. everything about the dog just stood out to me, and i'm the kind of person that when an animal stands out to me, and i feel something in my gut and i get emotions going, i want the animal, because i already feel close to it.. I realize that i may be young, but if you knew me personally, you would realize that i am completely mature. some people just turn out that way, in my case, my life has ran its course so far and this is how i am. I already have a few animals, and i'm adding on all the time, mostly because i work at a pet store.. heh. I've always wanted a dog, and i know i'm ready, i don't really want a puppy right now, i want a mature companion. also i would like a dog i can take for walks, and motivate me to lose weight. I've recently been extremely depressed, and its gotten even worse since i moved from new mexico, back home to baytown, and even though i have my fiancee, its still bad...the steps i've tried to take to help myself is by working out, and getting close to animals... i just didnt want any of you to think that i was an immature 19 year old, that had no clue what i was doing. so far i think i've done pretty good, i have a house, i'm getting married, and trying for my career, which will be hopefully rescueing animals, i'm not sure if i would want to be like a natureist and care for the animals and release them, or someone who rescues the animals from cruelty. i will definantly keep trying. i recently discovered a VERY large shelter about an hour away that i plan on going to often. everything you all have told me has helped, thank you.

i agree that personality really matters, and i have decided that the kinds of dogs i want are shelties and german shepherds.. they are just the dogs i like best, its not because i want some dog that looks like a wolf just for that reason or something for example, they are just what i want.

Me and my boyfriend went to a local shelter in texas city yesterday, and looked at a few dogs.. he immediately fell in love with a black and white husky mix dog, i wasn't too sure about her, but we're fostering her untill we decide if we want to keep her, and i'm pretty sure we will. she's wonderful! i dont know why i was putting so much energy into this searching for a dog thing, when i could of just gone to a shelter and looked around. she's such a good dog, she's amazing inside, on walks, and with my cat and the other dogs. she loves attention too, the only thing is, she has some kind of respitory problem going on right now that i have have to take her to the vet to find out.. its probably kennel cough.. I just wanted to tell everyone, if they were wondering, how things went.. i'm pretty excited. ^_^

Thats awesome cloudchaser! and please stick around petfinder. I'm 19 as well. I have 2 cats and a dog and i live in California. I've had an "interesting" life and it just keeps getting better! You sound similar to me in personality. ^_^ It sounds like she probably has kennel cough its really common for dogs in shelters to get it. my dog had it when we first adopted him. So ... im still waiting for you to post pictures.... LOL! Siberian huskies and pit bulls are probably my favorite breed of dogs. I just couldn't keep up with a husky!

Very Happy Lots of luck with the pup...

She definately needs to go to the vet (all new animals do). You will probably want to have a fecal done to check for worms, too. Is she spayed already?

Yay! Kudos to you and your bf for getting past the focus on the one dog and giving another one a chance to win you over. Some people get stuck on one animal and wont even think about other options. Thanks for giving another shelter dog a chance!! Smile Thats awesome. Since you are new I should tell you, we have a 24 hour picture rule around here. You have to post pics of the furry within 24 hrs. We demand it Laughing Smile We want to see the new addition!!!

Awesome!
So did you volunteer to foster her until a family could be found or does the shelter let you "try out"? Hope it works out.

Anyway, to answer your questions etc..

She's really not bad as far as having to keep up with her.. i was reading up on the breed and supposedly, they are really good with everything from animals to people naturally. and as far as on the leash goes, she did pull a little, but today i bought her a harness, and she's wonderful with it, and doesn't pull at all.

she's not spayed yet. she was at the shelter for a month, but they hadn't done anything to her at all. they were starting to think she needed to be euthenized because no one had looked at her.. which is surprising because she's wonderful.. a little stubborn, but she's a good cute dog. so when i take her back, they will spay her, give her the rabies shot, and put in a microchip.

they said we could foster her to basically "try her out" to see if she was the right dog for us, we plan on taking her back this weekend to get her spayed, and to complete the adoption.

I took her to the vet today, and they said that she did not have kennel cough, however, she does have heart worms, which is probably causing the strange coughing. I will be putting her on heart worm preventative untill we can afford the treatment.

I cant' seem to get photobucket to work right now, but you can go to my myspace and look at the pictures on there.

I'm sorry she's HW+. If she's coughing, I think it's quite advanced, but I don't know much about HW so I might be wrong. I hope somebody who dealt with HW would see this and give you some pointers.

I can't see the pictures. It says your profile is set to private or something (I don't have myspace account so is that why?)
