10 Tips To An Effective Presentation

ASPCA, National Shelter Outreach

  • Eye Contact
Using lots of eye contact makes people feel connected to you and the program.
  • Gestures
Gestures can help you paint pictures with words but be careful that exaggerated gestures don't detract from the message.
  • Enthusiasm
Be enthusiastic. If you don't care, why should they!
  • Articulation
Articulate your words clearly so your audience understands you, especially if the topic is unfamiliar to them.
  • Breath
Controlling your breathing helps you to control nervousness and gives you time to gather your next thought. It allows you to pause to provide emphasis.
  • Posture
Correct posture conveys confidence to your audience.
  • Tone
Change the tone of your voice to create or change a mood.
  • Dress
Dress for success. Be neat and professional. Don't wear accessories that make noise or that will be distracting.
  • Language
Use proper language and watch those nonwords (um, uh, etc.).
  • Smile
You look better and feel better when you smile. It will warm up the audience too.
