CITY, DATE - October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month and (YOUR SHELTER NAME) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) are using the opportunity to bring attention to the many wonderful adoptable dogs at shelters nationwide in need of good homes. The animals at (YOUR SHELTER NAME) can be viewed online by millions of prospective pet owners at the ASPCA's Website's link (www.aspca.org) to Petfinder.org, the Internet's largest searchable directory of homeless pets. With over 1,200 independent shelters and rescue groups linked to Petfinder, people have the opportunity to search online for their new best friend from the comforts of home. Available animals can be searched by size, sex, age, breed and location. Many shelters including (YOUR SHELTER NAME) are reporting that more adoptions and fewer returns have taken place because of Petfinder.

"The benefits that the Internet can provide to the shelter community and the animal welfare movement are limitless," says ASPCA President Dr. Larry Hawk. "The key to making a dent in the pet overpopulation problem is education and activism. The ASPCA and Petfinder web sites provide wonderful opportunities for both, which we hope will ultimately save the lives of millions of animals."

Each year, 2 to 3 million dogs are relinquished to animal shelters, and of those millions, 60% are needlessly euthanized simply because there are not enough homes. Sadly, most of these dogs are healthy, good-natured and perfectly adoptable. Adopt A Shelter Dog Month is also a time when (YOUR SHELTER NAME) and the ASPCA advocate responsible pet ownership. Although providing adequate food, shelter and water is extremely important, being a responsible pet owner also means adopting an animal for the right reasons. The decision to adopt a pet must be thought about and carefully planned. It is important for each and every family member to be in agreement that they want to bring a new pet into their home and that they understand that a 10 to 15 year commitment lies ahead. These points are especially important to consider if one is ever thinking about purchasing or adopting a pet as a surprise gift for a friend or loved one. Impulse decisions like these often times result in the unnecessary relinquishment of healthy animals to shelters.
