Here are the winners of the Petfinder Recipes for Pets contest! Though there were many great entries, we tried to choose recipes for a variety of animals, so people could share them with all their “best friends.”

Super Simple Yum Drops

Easy microwave treat for busy people that still want to cook for their furry companions!

Version I – For Dogs:

Ingredients:
3 jars baby food meat (or veggies)
1 and 1/2 c wheat germ (or cream of wheat)

Instructions:
Mix ingredients together well. Drop by spoonfuls on wax paper covered plate and cover with wax paper. Cook on high in microwave for 5-8 minutes (until treats are formed and firm). Store in refrigerator.

Version II – For Cats:

Ingredients:
3 jars baby food meat (or veggies)
1 and 1/2 c wheat germ (or cream of wheat)
small amount of tuna juice

Instructions:
Mix well. Drop by 1/4 spoonfuls onto wax paper covered plate and cover with wax paper. Cook in microwave on high for 5-8 minutes until formed and firm. Store in fridge.

Editor’s Note: Read the label of the baby food jars to be sure they don’t contain Onion Powder. There have been cases where cats developed onion toxicosis after eating baby food. Avoid Garlic and Garlic powder as well.


Treats for Small and Furry Friends

Ingredients:
small carrots (1 for each small & furry)
your pet’s favorite treat (Sunflower seeds work very well)
a knife
water
your pet’s food
…and your small pet!

Instructions:
First, take a carrot and hollow it out. Roll the carrot in water. Next, roll the carrot in your pet’s food. Then, put a few treats in the hollow. Give to pet and watch her enjoy!

(Please note – shelled sunflower seeds are safest)


Fried Rice – for you and your dog

“I’m a blessed mom with a finicky eater and way too smart 6-month-old male cocker/terrier mix which I found on Petfinder.com.

Ingredients:
2-3 C cut up chunks of any meat of your choice (Pork and Chicken work best)
2 C cold cooked rice (day old, stored in refrigerator)
3 eggs
3 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp sunflower oil or safflower oil (for Vitamin E)
1 Tbsp dried parsley or fresh
1/4 tsp of Garlic powder or 1-2 garlic cloves, minced

*optional: Juice carrots and other assorted veggies, add 1-2 Tbsp before each serving that way the nutrients remain intact and are fresh.
*optional: Dog vitamins pounded into a powder.

Instructions:
Heat wok or large pan at Medium heat. Add oil until hot. Beat eggs lightly in a bowl and set aside. Add the meat. Cook until almost done (a little pink in middle). Add rice. Stir frequently to avoid food sticking to pan. When rice is warm, add the eggs. Again, stir frequently. When the eggs look almost done, add soy sauce, parsley, garlic powder. Stir frequently until dry and somewhat crispy. Should take up to 15 min. to cook entire dish.

Serve when cooled. Put mixture in your dog’s dish, add the juiced vegatables and vitamins.

Pea”Mutt” Butter and Pumpkin “Pup”cakes

“Here is a recipe that is a favorite of my rescued dogs Dana and Sabine. Dana was found through Petfinder on her last day at a high kill shelter.” – Gina Moultrie

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1 egg (slightly beaten)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup peanut butter (chunky)
3 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup oats
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl mix water, pumpkin, egg, vanilla, and peanut butter thoroughly. In a large bowl combine flour, oats, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix wet and dry ingredients together and stir well. Spoon into a greased mini muffin pan, making sure to fill each cup completely and piled high. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until firm (but not too brown). Cool completely and store in an open container or paper bag in the refrigerator. Makes 30 mini pupcakes.


Doggone Birthday Cake

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 cup softened margarine
1/4 cup corn oil
(1) 3.5oz jar strained beef (baby food) or strained chicken
1 cup shredded carrots
3 eggs
2 strips bacon fried and crumbled or may use dog beef jerky

* plain yogurt for icing or cottage cheese.

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour an 8-inch round pan. Cream butter until smooth. Add corn oil, baby food, eggs, and carrots. Mix until smooth. Gradually adding flour and baking power continue to mix until smooth. Add crumbled bacon (or beef jerky) and fold into batter. Pour batter into greased round cake pan. Bake time: 60 -70 minutes (depending on your oven – cake should bounce back). Let cool. Top with plain yogurt or cottage cheese. Refrigerate any remaining portions.

Cookies for Horses

Ingredients:
1c oatmeal
1c flour
1c shredded carrots
1tsp salt
1Tbsp sugar
2Tbsp vegetable oil
¼ c molasses
¼ c water

Instructions:
Mix ingredients. Roll in to 1½ inch balls, place on cookie sheet and flatten. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
