For the fifth year in a row, Buddy was the No. 1 dog name, while Lucy is again the top cat name.

The top five most popular dog names stayed the same as in 2010, but cats are a different story: Smokey and Charlie moved up to the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively, while Midnight dropped to tenth after coming in second last year.

As the Twilight saga remains hot in bookstores and theaters, the name Bella, for both adoptable dogs and cats, has remained popular since 2010.

Cal Ripken, Jr'.s canine namesake
In our December newsletter, we asked: Do you have a pet named after a celebrity? We found that lots of famous people (or their names, at least) have gone to the dogs -- and the cats, too.

Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., singer Usher, Lucille Ball, and Supernatural star Jensen Ackles all have their four-legged namesakes.

Then there's a 12-year-old Schnauzer named Samuel L. Jackson and a black-and-white cat named Demimore -- not to mention The Shih-Tzu-ation, who also made our list of weirdest and wackiest pet names.

Lynn D. named her lively cats after two over-the-top performers: Janis Joplin and Grace Slick. She also gave a nod to well-known characters from fiction for her two other cats: Archie Goodcat, after detective Nero Wolfe's legman Archie Goodwin, and Lily Meowin, after Archie's lady friend, Lily Rowan. Weasley (named after Harry Potter's friend Ron Weasley) was honored by Sharon B.

As we do at the end of each year, we've taken a look at the 300,000+ pets posted on Petfinder and tallied up the most popular names for adoptable dogs and cats.

For the fourth year in a row, Buddy fetched the top spot as the most popular name for adoptable dogs. For cats, Lucy once again purred into first place, barely beating Midnight for the No. 1 ranking.

A name that continues to rise up the ranks
for both dogs and cats is Bella, probably due to the ubiquitous Twilight mania; the name jumped from No. 6 to the No. 4 spot for dogs, and from No. 4 to No. 3 for cats. Meanwhile, Rocky had a comeback, placing among the top 10 dog names after last making the cut in 2007, and Tiger also pounced into sixth place for cats.

Here are the full lists; after the jump, check out our top 10 celebrity-inspired pet names.

When I was 6 years old, my parents gave me the honor of naming our new calico kitten. Since I had already helped name several of our other pets, they were clearly under the impression that I understood the basics of selecting an appropriate moniker. Sadly, they were very wrong.
