The Petfinder.com Foundation is giving $150,000 in grants to shelters and rescue groups affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill in partnership with Merial's Paws to Save Pets and The Animal Rescue Site's Gifts That Give More.

Shelters from Galveston, TX, to Tallahassee, FL, have suffered from the economic impact of the oil spill. They are taking in more animals as the region's pet parents lose their livelihoods, while donations have decreased so much that many shelters can no longer cover general operating costs.

We're providing disaster grants to help with both operating and transportation expenses. Operating budget grants are going to shelters within 30 miles of the Gulf coast, and transportation grants are being awarded to rescue groups taking in pets to decrease the burden on these shelters.

One such rescue group is St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Branchburg and Madison, NJ. St. Hubert's was awarded $10,000 to take in 100 dogs from Gulf-area shelters. The group is providing housing and any needed medical care for each dog. "Unfortunately, their families are breaking up by having to give up their animals," says St. Hubert's president Heather Cammisa. "We wanted to extend our arm and help in any way we could, by helping to take in the new animals.'' (Meet the pets available for adoption at St. Hubert's Madison and Branchburg locations here.)

The Petfinder.com Foundation will continue to award disaster grants to shelters impacted by the Gulf oil spill. To help these shelters please donate to the Petfinder.com Foundation.
