We adopted Pepper 11 years ago from the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm in Fairport, NY, and have been blessed to have her as a member of our family. We couldn't have asked for a sweeter, kinder, more loving dog to adopt.
But not a day goes by that someone doesn't ask me what breed Pepper is. My answer is always, "Well ... that's a good question." Pepper has the coloring and fur of a Keeshond. Sometimes when she puts her ears back, she can look like a Collie. Her face looks a bit like an American Eskimo.
Pepper is a dog who lives for the cold weather. During winter, when we let her out, she will curl up in a snow bank and keep an eye on the yard. She will bark at anything and everyone -- but only because she wants to get close to them and smother them with affection. She greets the mailman and UPS man with a fiercely wagging tail and lots of licks.
She is a classic "Velcro" dog: Pepper needs to be around her people all of the time. When the family is not in the same room together, she gets troubled because she can't be with all of us at the same time. Pepper also loves other dogs, but not if they are too rough -- she's very submissive.
Pepper also has a bit of a stubborn side. If there is something she sees outside when she is in the yard she will not "come" until she had thoroughly investigated what caught her attention.
Most people feel that an adopted dog is a lucky dog. We feel that we are the lucky ones to have our adopted dog in our lives.
