Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month: 10 ways YOU can help

pit bull, dogs, dog adoption, pet adoption, adopt-a-shelter-dog month
Angel is one of the many wonderful dogs in need of a forever home at Fresno Bully Rescue in Fresno, CA.
October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month and, with the ongoing economic crisis, there are more dogs in need than ever. But what if you can't adopt?

Here are some easy ways you can still help:
  1. Donate your Facebook status. Just paste this message into the "What's on your mind?" box at the top of your page: "October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Save a life: Adopt a dog! http://www.petfinder.com"

  2. Tweet, retweet and repeat the following (or your own brilliant message): "October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Save a life: Adopt a dog! http://www.petfinder.com"
  1. Contact your local shelter or rescue group (you can search for groups near you here) and ask if they have a donation wish list or other flyer they'd like to you to post around your office or neighborhood. They may be holding special events for Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month which you can help promote.

  2. Share an adoptable dog or a Petfinder dog-adoption Happy Tail on your blog, Facebook or Twitter page each day of the month.

  3. Sign up as a foster parent or shelter volunteer then tell your friends how great it is. Contact your local shelter or rescue group, or register in our volunteer database.

  4. Add a Petfinder widget or banner to your Web site or blog.

  5. Write an op-ed about the importance of pet adoption for your local paper.

  6. Contact your local shelter or rescue group and offer to photograph their adoptable pets and upload the pics to Petfinder.

  7. Donate to your local shelter or rescue group or to the Petfinder.com Foundation in honor of Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month.

  8. Pass on an understanding of the importance of pet adoption to the next generation. Talk to your kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and other up-and-comers about animal shelters and why Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, and pet adoption in general, is important.
Did we leave anything out? Tell us your own ideas! (Don't forget to include "#photobook"at the end of your comment for a chance to have your pet photographed by Deaf Dogs and Rescued in America photographer Melissa McDaniel!)

Does Petfinder have any bumper stickers left and if not will they be getting any more?

I found someone who is looking for animal rescue (group) bumper stickers to help spread the word about pet adoption.

I'm surprised at how many people I talk to (even at dog parks) who have never heard of Petfinder.com! I figured by now it would be nearly a household name.

Please email me.

On Oct. 3, 2009, we adopted a sweet little Australian Healer" type dog from a shelter in Springfield, TN.
Today, Oct. 8, after a short, losing battle, we are having her put to sleep because she is infected with PARVO virus.
We understand budget constraints and such (believe me, we have our own) but to allow this to happen is nothing short of criminal as far as I am concerned. And it has nothing to do with getting ripped off for the "fees".
It has to do with becoming immediately attached to this animal and watching her die.
The shelter seemed at first pretty unconcerned, rather, they seemed to think we were blaming them for the infection. But I see now that their adoption list has been cancelled so perhaps we have saved someone else from the sadness we feel.
Ths is perhaps not the correct place for this "comment" but we would like to say to others, PLEASE insist on knowing these things before adopting.

Hi Doug- I think you may have found me on twitter already but for everyone else out there -- find us on Twitter at @petfinder. I look forward to seeing you there!

Awesome stuff, Jane. I did the Facebook part. Do you have a Twitter account? I'd like to @ you with my Tweet about this. Thanks for the great tips :)

I hope that every body that is concidering a dog (or Cat) to adpot from your local shelter or rescue organization and remember two is better than one. And do not pay for a pet unless it is for spay and neuter fees.

Put together a gift basket of dog toys, treats, flea prevention, blankets or other dog and cat goodies and bring it to your local shelter to pass around to all the animals staying there. Or donate any old towels and blankets, no shelter can ever have to many. Make bandannas for the shelter dogs to wear to attract some attention, especially large black dogs that often get over looked!
