All of us who work here have heard the story many times, but I remember before I got this job, Petfinder and its origins were a huge mystery to me.
Here's my favorite passage:
In those early days, my biggest struggle was hearing heartbreaking stories about abused or abandoned animals. The pup who was left tied to a lamp post in a thunderstorm. The dog who almost ran into traffic trying to escape some mean kids throwing rocks at him. ...Read the full story here.
Then a few months into our project, something changed. Somehow my perspective shifted. I started to see the hopeful side of those sad stories, like the woman who chased off the mean kids and coaxed the dog into her car, or the vet who stayed after hours to patch up a street cat who'd been injured, or the family who adopted an abused dog and lovingly taught her to trust again.

Thank you so much for creating petfinder.com - thanks to you I have a wonderful puppy named Sonia - she has made me so happy - I left most of the day. She is a cross between a great dane and lab. She was at a rescue place in Southern Il and without your website she would not have been mine. I lost 4 animals in 7 months - 2 cats and 2 dogs - all were above the age of 11. Thanks again - it is much appreciated.

Hi Georgia, Petfinder is a place where thousands of shelters and rescue groups list their adoptable pets -- so you'd adopt from one of them, not from us. Each adoption group has its own policy, so your best bet is to contact the rescue group that has a dog you're interested in (their contact info is listed below the pet's description) and ask them whether they require adopters to have a fenced-in yard.

I have a question about petfinder? I was told I can't adopt a dog from petfinders' unless I have a completely fenced in yard. Actually a friend told me that. However I live on almost an acre and I have always had dogs. I can't afford to put up a fence!! Is this true???
