Whenever someone meets him, the conversation inevitably turns to speculation about what breeds he is a mix of.
I have postulated that there must be a strong Rottweiler/Doberman component, since from the back end his coloration and physique are very close to those breeds. Then again, I may be reacting to the fact that somewhere along the line someone (sadly) felt compelled to crop his tail.
From the front, things are less clear. It seems like some of his unusual traits might lend a clue -- for example, he is deaf, extremely fast, has huge paws and long, awkward legs.
I will be posting those in the next week or two, but thought it would be fun to see what kinds of guesses I might solicit from all of you. So let me know what you think!

I am almost POSITIVE that he is a doberman/dalmatian mix, he looks almost exactly like my dog who is a doberman/dalmation
He looks like a great dane, collie, doberman, dalmation, rottweiler, shepard mix.
Alan is a very cute dog. Here are the breeds that I think he's a part of:
1. Dalmation-he's deaf or just because he's old
2.Great Dane-he has long legs and big feet
3.Greyhoung-he's fast
4.Doberman and Rotteweiler- the colors are similar
Well good luck to the search! I hope this helps!
I agree with most of the posts here. He is a beautiful dog and I am so happy for both of
you to have found each other. He seems to me to be part greyhound, maybe part
Dalmation, ( the deafness) some breed of collie and probably a couple others. I am
also curious as to what the test reveals! Thanks for the chance to guess.
I wish I knew his size...His black & tan coloring make me think Doberman and if he inherited his deafness then maybe Dalmation, Great Dane or Australian Shepherd? Either way he is a gorgeous dog.
Personally I'd say he looks like a lab/dobie mix.
Would love to be able to see the rest of him. Just working with his head and your description, my guess is Great Dane/Dobie.
Here's a link to Lexi, available for adoption now in New Hampshire. Lexi is a lab/great dane mix. Look familiar?

My first thought was border collie/great dane.
this probably sounds like a broken record by now but, for sure before i read any of the comments regarding Alan, i right away saw border collie. with what i can see of his body shape/ posture, feet and smart expression, it looks as though he has a definite touch of border collie(i don't want to forget his ears and whiskers too!). then i think doberman.. shape of his face if you think of a border colie and dobie is lean, the dobie being longer and bringing more of the hound look out(looking related to great dane, which is also a possibility,,?) as well as possibly bringing the deafness trait along. and maybe part of me sees a little retriever in his sweet softened touch(not saying the border colie and dobie aren't sweet as well). coloring for these breeds would be right on as well as personality combined(+coat). i wish i could see more pictures cause i could go on all day and night. i can't wait read what he is!
I've guessed for nearly every breed on Petfinder and I almost was always right. First off, Alan is one cutie patootie. You are blessed to have him. :) I have a Great Dane my self, and Alan's lips/head say Great Dane to me. The ears and skinniness of his head say Greyhound and his color may possibly come from Border Collie and some sort of Terrier. His nose is sort of long, so maybe Doberman as well? When I first looked at him, I immediately thought "Great Dane, Greyhound, and Doberman." .. Keep me posted and let me know once you find results!! Hmm.. also, maybe, Black Labrador Retriever???
I think I see greyhound or whippet I can't see enough of the rest of the body to say. Maybe some kind of terrier also. Let me know I'm curious to find out.
Thanks Emily
I definitely see Great Dane in the face, I would guess there is some Dobie and possibly Border Collie in there too. Can't wait to find out!
Alan is a Great Bordobie!! haha... to me he looks like he's got the ears of a border collie, body of a dobie and his head just screams great dane to me... plus you said he's got big paws and long legs.
some kind of terrier in there too maybe... those whickers are precious!!!
whatever he is he is adorable!!
Your dog looks a lot like my Chance - and I really don't know what all he is either. Possibly Black Lab + Dalmation + Bird Dawg. But I have also come across a breed which really looks like my dog and yours may have some of this breed in him. It's called a McNab - descendant of Scottish herding dogs. Here's a website link:

There is definitely Border Collie in there somewhere and with the square muzzle I would also say Great Dane. My guess is a Heniz 57!!!!!
i can't see the body or the height of the dog very well. have you thought about doberman/beagle or great dane mix. the white wants to take my guess away from rott/dobie. just a thought. please let me know what you find out.
I think he is gorgeous. Where did you get him?
He is definately half Border Collie, and the rest, maybe Doberman?
i think your right about the doberman, maybe some greyhound and border collie in there somewhere..and many more breeds. Im really interested to see exactly what he is :)
I SAY HE IS AMERICAN STAFORSHIRE AND BLK LAB
I'm going to guess Greyhound or whippet (Definitely some type of Sight Hound), and maybe Rottweiler or Shepard
From the picture and what you have described, I'm going to say possible Dobe, Great Dane, Greyhound, Labrador. I want to go ahead and add Dalmation to that too.
Can't wait to find out!!!!
I would say Greyhound/Dobbie and maybe some something else.
let me know
