For the second year in a row, Buddy is the No. 1 name among Petfinder's 145,242 adoptable dogs, with Max coming in again as No. 2.
Of the 140,269 cats on Petfinder, the No. 1 name is Lucy, just barely beating Molly,
which jumped from No. 10 to the No. 2 slot this year. See the full lists below.
As for unusual pet names, they certainly grab the attention of folks looking to adopt. In fact, they sometimes help get our furry friends into homes even faster. One Petfinder member, Forever Home Rescue New England in Walpole, MA, had trouble finding a home for a dog named Buck. After they changed his name to Joe the Plumber during election season, more people began viewing his picture and he was quickly adopted.
A "very sad-looking dog" named Woe Izmee and a family of cats dubbed Domino, Ditto, Etcetera, And-so-on and And-so-forth ranked highest in originality in our survey of more than 12,000 shelters and rescue groups in the Petfinder network. You can see the full list of the most unusual names and group names after the jump.

When I was a young girl my dad was a police officer. We bought a boxer puppy and couldn't think of a name that fit him. Joking around ( like usual) my dad said the name Trooper. We laughed for a minute then decided we actually liked it. He seemed to like it to so we kept it. Sometimes my dad still has a little laugh about that.
My cat's name is Sir Beef Wellington III.
I had always imagined that when I got a cat, I'd name it Meatball. However, when I first met the cat I ended up adopting, I didn't think he looked like a Meatball at all. So my husband suggested Beef Wellington as a joke, and the Sir and III parts got tagged on as our naming conversation got more and more ridiculous. Eventually it suck though, and we think it works.
We call him Welly most of the time, though.
We have a 4 year old chocolate lab named Marni Louise--"Marni" means "rejoice" in Hebrew (as in ,"rejoice, Husband--you finally got your dog!) and we added Louise because we decided she was Jewish and it fit nicely... 12 y/o cat named "Buddy" (typical), had a sister "Chloe" who died a few months ago but 2 new kittens named "Rose" and "Sylvia" (also Jewish) taken from the 2 "old ladies" characters my husband and I adopted while we were dating and used to leave weird phone messages to each other from "Rose Cohen" and "Sylvia Rubenstienmentz" Love them all!!!
I have one of the sweetest spoiled dogs in the world. She has her own side of the bed that she shares with me and my husband. She loves to sleep. Her name is Lillian Mae but we call her Lil or Wilwee (in baby talk ofcourse )for short. She has one of the meanest half brothers ( a cat) named Frank Lyn we call him Frank and he always answers to it...literally meowing from the other room..They love eachother and play alot even though he is years younger than she is.
my doggies name is Moka, she is a 7 month old mini dachsund and she is smooth haired. I used 2 love her, but now that she poops so much....... sometimes I wonder.lol. im the only 1 in my house that actually cleans up after her and cares for her.
I had a dog a few years back named sugar. She had a litter of puppies, but sadly a storm came and killed all but one (she had 5 puppues). we named the one splenda, after the little packets, because she was the runt of the litter. She was the sweetest dog ive ever had.
I let my son name my cat. I should have realized a 15 yr old taking japanese would have chosen a name like saykuhara. I didn't find out til later that it means sexual harrasment. LOL. Oh well he is named and it fits him.
Some of those names are very scarce. My ginger tabby Nacho was adopted just in time otherwise he would of been put down. He has got along fine and loves is home. He will be turning 3 on the 14th of April.
i got a baby pomeranian and named her nuggert (yogurt and chicken nugget mixed) because thats all my toddler Josephia would eat! When I turned 21, Nuggert had babies to Chiklert and Marmert! So cute. BTW- my son loves puppies! His diaper was so full one day that chicklert took it off for him!
We got a puppy for christmas from my mother-in-law...She is white just lie snow except for a few spots in certain place. My son was trying to name her--called her everything you can think---she would not come to any of those. So i joking stated lets call her Virginis & guess what she came right to me. And that is how she got her name.
Our 15 1/2 year old orange tabby is Data named for the gold skin and gold eyed android from Star Trek Next Generation. Unfortunately his companion/friend Geordi long ago warped out of our lives. Data lives on and Prospers.
Our little fuzzy girl was named Abby (a Miniture Shnauzer), but her official name was "AbbyGail Hasnotail". We even had a little song we sang LOL She left this world a few weeks ago after being in our family for over 10 years. She lost her fight with cancer and is missed dearly!!
My parents had a very obese cat with a whole lot of attitude that was originally named "Max". Through the years, he earned the names Max Smedley, Larry Lardbutt, Sparky Sprinkles, and Rufus. He would answer to all or none.
my cats names are syp, aun, and deez, and i have a dog who's name is peanut but nuts for short because he's crazy.
my chihuahuas name is Dinkleman Pemon. and my cats name is tobias love.
When I was a kid, we had a collie/shepard puppy named Piglet. He was so cute. I taught him how to sit, and how to crawl, and he was only about 4 months when he learned this. He was my favorite puppy of all. (I never knew my current dog when she was a puppy, so she can't be sad about this!!)
My dog is Java and my cats are Jamocha and Latte. It all started because the pound I'm a programmer (and use Java scripting language). My son likes to call her Java The Mutt. Oh, and she's a black lab, so she's HIGHLY caffeinated. The poor cats came after, so they were just stuck with the series!
I am suprised our dogs even know there names. They get called by everything.
Laia is called Laia bear, Whosa my Pig, Lai Lai, Lai Lai Bear, Gator, and Lai Lai smabs
Napolean is called Polie, Nappy, Polie Olie, Rollie Polie, Rolie Polie Olie, AP (Accident Prone), Bad eye, The mop,.......
No matter what we call them they come anyone. They even respond to here kitty kitty kitty and they are dogs.
Our cats names are Great Odins Raven (from Anchorman) and Zoe Bean (she looks like a black jelly bean when she sleeps), and our younger dog is named Harlei Quinn (Batman :P). Our rabbit is named Trogdor the Burninator (Homestar Runner)
So we have Shadoe, Harlei, Raven, Zoe, and Trogdor :)
Growing up I had two Springer Spaniels named Barney Bagel and Suzie Creamcheese. :)
I was fasinated with quarks and delighted when there was a reference to them in one of the Star Trek books / movies. It mentioned a map and there were notations of "quarks here" and "boojums here" or similar, I can't quite remember. I named two little kittens I got after that reference. Quark was a beautiful Russian Blue cross and Boojum was a longhaired grey tabby.
Forgot to mention, both Skye and Manfred are from PetSave, a local private agency that does awesome stuff. I'm forever gratefull.
Lots of neat names. Me, I call my Sidey Skye because that's the name she came with (her ice-blue eyes) and her cat Manfred because he's just Manfred. I had a mallard duck friend once when I was out sketching wildlife I name Lucy. She came to her name and did an impossible thing for a duck, she'd do a fly-by and grab bread out of my hand. Nice people the critters(the name of my late a beloved previous cat). We have a raven I call Loki (Norse ancestry, me) who loves to follow us on our walks and throw comments.
My dog is Chevy and my cat is Chase.........
my dog name is a lab, collie and german sheppard. she was given to us. she is 8 years old. really friendly and smart. by the way her name is searina.
Our one cat is "Jellybean", named by my 11 yr old. She also gets called "Miss Queen Jellybean" (b/c she really is the queen of the animals), or if we want to tease her, she gets "Big Fat Jelly Cat".
Our other cat is "Kit-Kat", named by my 10 yr old. We wanted to call her "Two Bucks", since we paid only a toonie for her, but my son was adamant that her name be "Kit-Kat". So it is.
Our dog is Piper, only because we called her "Puppy" for so long, and she would come to that, and Piper was close enough so she wouldn't be confused. It suits her just fine!
My husband and I adobted a flatcoated retriever from a shelter in Toronto. The puppy was about 3 month old and somebody named him "Kaos". We kept the name and it suits him perfectly.
Kaos is our sunshine and I have not met a person yet who does not love him.
My parents found two stray kittens in a hole in our backyard. My dad brought them in one at a time. I was so confused and excited at the same time. He named them Hocus and Pocus. We fed them with a syringe and took care of them until they were well enough to go to a good family.
My husband and I have 5 dogs. 4 mini poodles and a yorkie.Their names are Tia and Tessa(daughter and mother) Toby ( the yorkie and our little rescue) and Jax and Jewels(Brother and sister) They are a handful but we absolutely love them. I would love to be one of our dogs for a day. They get a walk everyday; they only have Ma's homemade treats ; they eat holestic dog food and get lots and lots of lovin:they have their own room and they get to go to work with their Ma and last but not least they have their own bank account. I call it the puppy fund. We save all of our coin and the $ that we get from recycling , add that to what they get for their birthdays and there you go. It helps pay for their incidentals. And boy we have had a few of those!
Cheers!
well we recently lost a dear member of the family, our dog (rottweiler) named Dakota aka Kota. We Had to gain a new member (shit tzu) which one of the children have named Mistletoe, due to it was christmas time. We call her Missy for short. We also have a cat named Midnight aka Midders who is black except for one little white spot on his chest.
We have a black lab / collie mix named Fisher, also answers to Fish, Fisher Faces....My 10 year old daughter came up with the name and I couldn't imagine him as being named anything else.
Our last dog , a white poodle / terrior mix was still born and the vet revived her. They named her Angel, and we kept it. We used to call her Angel Face - so now you can understand why we call our current dog Fisher Faces....
our cats are Sushi, Chop Suey, Tastes Like Chicken (Tasty for short), and well last but not least, "Dan" aka. Tardan of the Jungle.
We have a Beagle that was bred by our neighbours so we actually named him before we even knew he would later become ours. He was born on 07-07-07 and was the 7th puppy. Sooooo we called him JACKPOT!! It makes sense once you hear the reasoning.
My husband has named our dog and cat unusual names.
For our cat he named her SATA. Yes, he named her after "serial ATA"--a computer term. Obviously he's a major computer nerd :P
Our puppy also has a strange name--Potato :P Again, this is a name from my husband; he named it after a dog in an anime series he likes. Again, evidence of supreme geekiness. I call our dog Tato for short. So we definitely have names for our animals that are unique!
We adopted a beagle puppy at the local shelter and she came with the name Jessie. With a friend named Jessie, i felt it inappropriate to go with that name so she was called "Puppy" for 2 months!
Randomly one day, we decided to name her "Skittles" and it has just stuck. To this day, she fully suits that name
I have an eleven yr old blue heeler mix male dog named pup, a 3 yr old male yorkie named timmi, and a 3 yr old female named charollette. My cats names are swat, sunshine, midnight smudge, pudggy, and momma.
We rescued a prenant cat from the back garden. Next day 6 kittens. One black and white kitten had a horseshoe shaped white marking over his eyes. To tell them appart we started to call him "Horseshoe Head." We ended up keeping him as we couldn't find a home. His name got shortened to "SHOE." We didn't change it because he answered to it. If we had realised at the beginning, we were going keep him, we would have given him a proper name. I kind of like his name now.
My Dad has a Miniature Schnauzer, Barcaly, and he used to have a Wheaton Terrier, Morgan.
My Grandmother's dog's name is Maximum, because he was the biggest in his litter.
I have a cat, Fudge, because he is the colour of white-chocolate fudge.
Our daughters got us a Bordercollie pup last Christmas.. We named her " Mayham"..because that is what she causes for our cats,,"Angel" and "Sypon"... She has livin up this household that's for sure.. Love her dearly...
Had a cat in the 70's named Mao -- short for Mousie Tongue --(Mao Tse-Tung).
My dog's name is Eli, I had his name picked out even before I seen him and it suits him so well. Adorable.
I used to have a Siamese Fighting Fish named Arcturus, but he died about a week ago. I also have a budgerigar named Piccolo, he is the cutest thing ever (and I know all people say that about their pets, but he's way cuter than any dog, no offence dog owners)
My female Portuguese Waterdog has an unusual but logical name.
Soccer is a key activity in my family and we have admired the abilities of Luis Figo, a well known and respected Portuguese soccer player. So there was no disagreement when I suggested that we name our pup "Figo".
Figo is a simple name, pronounced "fee-go"; yet most Canadians can not seem to understand how to say it. Common mispronunciations inclued Figaro and Fy-go.
If we get another Portuguese Waterdog we might name him/her Ronaldo, after Christian Ronaldo (although he is a little too pretty for our tastes).
i have a dog named Kaya pronouced kay-a. and a cat named Blue.
my cats names are lettuce, pickle and onion. my 5 year old son is creative : )
I work at veterinary clinic and we have seen some very original names including Anakin and Vader, Yahoo and Dotcom, One-Way, and Small Block Mopar.
I use to have named Sasha, but at the time we called her ''Salsa The Little Hottie''. She was a Alaskin Timberwolf.I was about 5 so I couldn't take care of her my self and my mom was having a baby,so we had to give her away to a person my grandmas friend knew.I really have been missing her so I may go up and see her soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a rat terrier rescued from a shelter that I named Harpo, because he never barks!
when i was a little girl i always wanted a dalmation so i wrote a letter to santa and he said his spst machine was brokenthat year so i tried again the next year and i woke up christmas morning and under the tree was a dalmation trying to eat a red christmas ornament so i named it scotieand i dont know why i named him that but now i am older but just recently scotie had to be put to sleep because his whole back side was parilized so it was real emotional for me but i will always love him so thats my story.
I have a rat terrier named Mitzi and a manx cat named Roxy there my children, sometimes they even give me 1/2 of the bed, but I love them, can't imagine life without them
I took care of a rat terrier after her owner had passed from Cancer. The owner called her "Freebie" but Freebie was a little escape artist and I didn't enjoy yelling "freebie" all around the neighborhood, so we changed it to "Phoebe".
my precious doggie went to heaven a couple months ago i miss him i love him more the holidays are sad im so greatful to have had him in my life for iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii18 years i think of budley everyday my house feels lonely happy holidays to all of you great animal lovers !!!

I brought my beautiful Great Pyrenees baby douug LADDIMEIR home and had to bottle feed him there was to 10 in the litter and his mom could barely feed him, the runt, who grew in to a giant. Then along came a abused little bitty Shih Tzu we named KAMMIER. The three of us were unsepratable until i had to attend a funeral this past summer. My sitter tried to walk them without their lease. They were hit by a car. Man, as i write this im still going through such a terrible loss. Im 49 and never knew one could love such wonderful dogs like they were my own kids. So now im on the hunt to find the very same dog breeds to love and care for. I didnt reliaze the prices people are asking. But there is alway hope. Cant wait to find then lucky dooogs.
I have a goldfish named Hannibal Lector.
I have a brown tabby named Moxie Crimefighter. I found it in celebrity baby names. Penn from Penn and Teller has a daughter named that. I love my cat's name!! It fits her so well...she has tons of personality and loves to play fetch :)
We have 3 miniature dachsunds. Itty Bitty (that's what you get when you let 2 4-year olds name a dog), Moose (my 2 year old started calling him Moosie-Boy), and Chili Cheese.
You never realize how embarrasing the names are until your animal gets out of the backyard and you are driving thru the neighborhood yelling their names.
Our furry family members:
Floyd, Bella, Otis, Dapple, Bogart, and Bacall
I had a fish named "Samurai Jack Sparrow The Pumpkin King". He died about 8 months ago, and I got a new one and named him "Flap Jack The Pancake Flipper".
Last SUbnday our Shepherd-Hound mix passed. We called her Scarlett Rose O'Puppy.
We have a CHINESE CRESTED named CASHEW CHICKEN and my best friend has MOOSHU PORK!!
Adopted a snaggle tooth schnauzer to our family 18 mos. ago. Rescue group was calling her Jordan but just did not fit her. So we call her Puffin (after Hugh Hefner) but she also goes by egg mcPuffin, Puffin-ator, hr Puff-in-stuff and Peanut.
"Fuzzy" McNutt. This was an actual last name of a family that owned a cat.
Those are really funny names for pets!!!! If i get a male dog I will name him Rocket
and a girl would be Roxy! Those to me are great names but those names are just plain old
funny! I really want a dog!
There is a lady I see at the dog park I goto with 3 Irish Setters named Pace, Picante, and Salsa
My Chihuahua's name is August. I had planned to take my time and come up with something good but a trip to the vet shortened my thinking time. I was told I had to come up with a name, even if temporary for the files. I just said the name of the month and it has been his name ever since.
We had a dog named Guy Beagle Dog that passed last year.
Our current canine crew: Shayla AKA "Bay", Raven Majestik AKA Rae Rae or Soldier, D'iogi (pronounced D-O-G) Leo Lou, and Katie AKA Katiebug.
My husband named one of our fosters RERUN. I've never heard of a dog named Rerun in my life, but he loves his name.
I'm getting a pet beagle soon and I'm going to name her Porthos, from the show Star Trek: Enterprise. Captain Jonathon Archer has a pet beagle on the ship with the same name, and since I'm a fan of the show, that's what I'm naming my puppy.
I found my kitten on the side of the road and saved her. she was so upbeat and lovable. I somehow came up with the name Mimzy Von Sprinkles. Mimzers is her nickname.
My English Bulldog is named Queen Foucault. Queen = my favorite band of all time and Foucault = The name of my favorite theorist: Michel Foucault.
AND, my Bengal cat is named Khaiah. She named herself, don't ask how.
:)
Benny
Those names are tame. ;)
My Border Collie's name is Our Companion Diocese. He is Diocese, D, or OCD for short. Every Sunday in church we pray for different people and groups, and one of the ones we always pray for is "Our Companion Diocese of _____". So, now I can say that we pray for my dog every Sunday at church. The pastor certainly got a kick out of that one!
We named our dog Zenzi (named after a Dutch bar in the Mumbai neighborhood where we found her living on the streets.) Also had cats named "Weird Ol' Aunt Bits", "Mr. P", "Pantyhoe", "Choo Choo Comaneci" and "Spoon." Best animals in the world! :)
Hurley, our Great Dane/American Staffordshire Terrier is 80 lbs of pure muscle. "Hurley" from the show Lost was his inspiration--a big guy with a sad face and crazy hair (ears in the dog's case) who just wants everyone to like him :)
Papi, our polydactyl Russian Blue cat's namesake is "Big Papi" aka David Ortiz from the Boston Red Sox because nothing seems to get under his skin and he can be counted on to take care of business. BTW, he and the dog are best friends--they're freakin' adorable!
Until very recently he had a blind foster kitty named...Stevie Wonder. Stevie was a sweetie but the "Beastie Boys" , our two large agressive males Darn Cat and Buttons, just would not play nice with him. Buttons is actually much fiercer than his name would imply.
I had two dogs that crossed over the "rainbow bridge". One was named BaiLEY (a shepherd mix) , the other was Velvet (a black lab mix). I soon got a new pup to fill the large void, and wanted to somehow combine their names. I came up with LEVI. When I looked at what the name Levi meant, it meant "joined, in harmony". So Levi she became! She is a Malinois Belgian Shepherd Mix)
Our girl-cat is "Sappho," our boy cat is "Siddhartha." (Continuing a long friend & family tradition of s-names: Snootsy, Spitfire, Sphinx, Spooks, Spiedner, Sprite, Sputnik, Sparkle, etc.) Our pup is "Maeby." We are also part-time step-parents to the dogs, "Zoe" and "Jethro," and named our foster kitties, "Melvin" and "Willow. Oy! So many animals!
My parents named their dog Shady Grove, as my dad said he's always wanted to name a dog that. Our dog is named Smokey, which isn't that unusual, if he were a gray dog. He's coal black instead, so we're not sure what kind of smoke he's supposed to look like! And finally, growing up, I had a dog named Rodan, after the monster in Godzilla!
I adopted a three legged, snaggle toothed tuxedo cat named Rocky from my local shelter a year and a half ago. The name just didn't fit as he was definately a lover and not a fighter. I spent the next two days calling him every name in the book (nice ones of course) when I came up with "Barney". He took one look at me and came running as fast as his three little legs could carry him and Barney he has been ever since. Interesting as the calico I had adopted 6 days earlier had been called Betty Boop. He's Barney Google and she's Betty Boop, but to everyone else they'll forever be the Rubbles.
My boyfriend and I have two dogs. Our little girl's name is Kudra Xia and our little boy's name is Gideon Spotticus. Our vet's office especially likes saying "Gideon Spotticus has arrived" over their intercom!
My husband has a "J" theme happening with our cats. They are Jack, Jasmine, Jenny-Meg and Jinx.
DH took great pains to come up with names that make words when you add "hi" in front of them. Hijack, hijinx.
Jasmine was a name I picked out, and Jenny-Meg came about rather strangely. The kitten came to us with the name "Meg". We didn't want to completely change her name, but my husband wanted to stick with the Js. We noticed that she would ferociously growl and protect her bowl while eating. It was then that my husband declared, Jack and Jasmine are are on "Jenny-Meg" diet. She eats everything to make sure they don't get fat. (A rhyming word-play on the Jenny-Craig diet).
My cat's name is Goldeneye 007, we call him Double-Oh for short :)
my dad had a cat named tushy coco, now i have 2 st.bernards named maggie moo and maggie may we rescued them from a trailer park that was to small for them and that was just their names so we left it that way!! =)
Where I live, local slang for the impoverished and rowdy direct decendants of Dust Bowl refugees are called Dalians (Oildale + Aliens = Dalians). I have rescued feral kittens from this area, two of which are named Dalia and Dalianne.
I have a tabby cat named Winnowill and a callie cat named Monica. I also have a puppy named Leah.
One time I was in the Vet's waiting room, and someone brought in their cute Pit Bull that had a great name... he was solid white with one black spot over his eye, and his name was "Shiner." I loved that!
my husband and i adopted a black lab mix. the group we got her from had named her GOLDILOCKS...??? her brother and sister were WOLF and GRANNY, so i can only assume that our dog was supposed to be LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD and they mixed up the fairy tale or something. or maybe GOLDILOCKS was a joke since she is black as night rather than a blonde. we wound up changing her name to ROXY, and it fits her perfectly!
My family and I adopted a female pure breed German Shepherd without papers and we named her Maya I went to www.germanshepherdnames.com and that was the only name that we as a family liked.....But if we had gotten a male we would have named him Max
GUMP,,the cat,,CHUMLEY,,the dog!
