Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, recently wrote on his blog that Barack Obama has promised his daughters they can get a dog once the election is over.
Pacelle notes that the American Kennel Club has nominated a number of "hypoallergenic" breeds for the girls -- one of whom reportedly has allergies -- including the bichon frise, poodle, Chinese crested, miniature schnauzer and soft-coated wheaten terrier.
We applaud Pacelle for urging the Obamas to choose adoption, whatever breed they opt for. And, as Pacelle notes, there are plenty of purebreds (such as wheaten terrier Maggie at TAILS Humane Society in DeKalb, IL, pictured here) waiting for loving homes -- in the White House, or any house -- on Petfinder!

What a great happy ending for Maggie! Thanks for sharing, Maggie's Mom!
I adopted this beautiful girl about a month after this was posted. I never saw this till someone from Tails passed along to me the other day. I went to drop off a donation last August, saw Maggie, fell in love with her wonderful personality and eyes. She's the best.
Dear Mr. Obama, I think it would a wonderful thing to try and find a Hypoallergenic dog or pup from the shelter or a rescue. I also think schools should teach children to learn to treat animals right and that pets shouldnt be set out to starve. And also Im wondering if you our new President could end all gassing chambers in all little counties and enforce people to spay and neuter their pets. Dogs are like kids and they are waiting in shelters to be loved a wait that never comes for most only to see death at their door. Seems that people have no time for dogs unless they are retired. People should be given incentives for taken care of their animals maybe so many wouldnt end up at shelters or something to keep people from given up their dogs and cats so easily. This is abad time for animals also because there are so many owner surrenders at this time because people dont have the money to take care of them. Shelters are staying crowded every week in many states.
god anonymous! don't get ur panties is a wad! i agree with the other anonymous, u r a freak! i'm sure it would mean a lot to whatever lucky dog got chosen by the obamas, don't you? even tho its only 1 dog out of a lot, im sure that dog would appreciate u shutting ur extremely large piehole!
Yeah! He should TOTALLY adopt a dog. It would be SOOOO cute!
Good that Obama wants a dog.
Bad that he wants one now at election time and not before.
Terrible that someone like him with so many resources hasn't rescued at least three dogs.
As someone that is involved with animal rescue I think the Obama's should adopt from a shelter and give a homeless canine a new life.. What better way to teach his children how to be responsible adult's, and to spread the word's " Adopt from a Shelter".. I have written to the AKC and stated my dismay at the fact that the AKC is sponsoring a "contest of breed's" for the Obama's to choose from and televising this contest .. It is this type of thing that promote's puppy mills since the furbaby that win's this so called AKC contest will be at the top of the puppy mill list for the following year..
"Pet's are not Disposable"...
I think it a great idea, adopting a dog that has a one bad chance should deserve a great second one. I think Obama will make a great president. Oh and for you Anonymous writers, don't hide behind a word let your voice be heard, don't be scared!!!
Though personally I don't support Obama, I do hope in his search for a new furry friend that he considers one of the many wonderful animals that come through shelterslike ours every year. Even if he does want a purebreed, almost half our animals in our overflowing shelter are purebreeds! So wether they want a a loveable mutt or a wonderful purebreed, I hope when it comes time to search for the right dog that they consider shelters, rescue groups, and humane societies.
Emily, Best Friends has a petition going to encourage the Obama family to adopt a dog rather than buy a puppy from a pet store. Over 40,000 people have signed it already. http://network.bestfriends.org/Petitions/Detail.aspx?pn=9&g=330dbd95104f4f589f58dcfc97e355f6
Rescue can also put pictures of their available dogs on Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/groups/767742@N25/
I think it is great that Barack Obama is considering buying a dog. Dogs are wonderful pets. I thinI think Obama will be a great president if he wins the election. I have also found a link on a list of all the hypoallergenic dogs, including hybrids: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoallergenic_dog_breeds
When he's in the White House I hope he will consider adopting a schnauzer from Schnauzer Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic. A miniature schnauzer would be a breed to consider if one of his daughters has allergies. I am a volunteer with this organization. I transport and foster dogs.
For Heaven's Sake. Don't you people have more to do? Try to use your energy by working with Rescue and your local Shelters rather than making useless comments.
I'm sure Senator Obama and his Family will make their own decissions as to what and which Furr Baby is right for their home and their life style. That's a personal matter.
In the meantime. Opt to Adopt yourselves. Support your local Shelters. Foster. Work for your Breed Rescue of choice. Get the word out to Spay and Neuter. Lead by word AND deed.
This is, after all, about the animals.
i meen... dont vote for obama he will do nothing but destroy our contry that our soliders have died to make it what it is today.
ok watever ur a freak ok
