Baby bunnies spotted in NJ!

bunnies1.jpgYesterday my pit bull Mojo alerted me to the bunny nest in the yard. I'm still questioning mother rabbit's wisdom. Yard next door = NO PETS.  My yard = three big dogs.

I think there are five bunnies in there. And they actually do look like bunnies -- those ears are so damn cute. I was worried about them in the rain, but the way the mom has the fur and then thick dead/live grass mat over them -- and then the tall grass bent over --- they were warm and dry in there. I took my pics and tucked them all safely back in until tomorrow.

bunnies2.jpgI have a four-foot-high puppy playpen surrounding the nest to keep dogs out -- I open it when the dogs are locked safely inside. Apparently Mom only comes to nurse one or two times a day, at dusk and dawn. And she has done so since I set up the playpen, so I guess she isn't bothered.

They tell me the babies will be out and hoppy in no time -- two weeks even. That's when it will be scary. Mojo would so like to have one. He wouldn't *mean* to hurt it.  Does anyone remember Lenny from Of Mice and Men?

Fingers crossed.

crystal your pretty stupid =.= those are WILD bunnies, so in other words shes most likely keeping them WILD
so shes not selling them or anything =.=

Yesterday MY pitbull uncovered a nest of baby bunnies. The night before my husband had removed some fencing from around an area he had seeded to re-grow grass. We have 5 dogs here. Yesterday Mimi ( my pbt) was intensely interested in one particular spot. I checked to be sure there wasn't a baby bird or something she might eat. I saw nothing except for what I now know was a dog hair/grass cuttings rooftop.

Later in the morning Mimi very seriously encouraged her dog pals to stay in the house, herding them to the back porch and she laid in front of the doggie door to keep them from coming back out.. She would not come into the house.

A while later I was heading out to run an errand and when I looked for Mimi to make sure she was inside, she was asleep out at that interesting spot. As I walked over I saw she had dug, I sighed thinking the new grass isn't going to last. Mimi jumped up as I walked over, wagging her tail like crazy and doing her happy dance as I discovered the nest of baby bunnies she was protecting. I provided the link to my blog where I have some pictures in a flickr album. There is one short v.clip of Mimi looking at her babies.

I replaced the nest roof and my husband put the fencing back up. I've checked on them a few times and they are bigger today !! Life. It makes me smile.

I am a veterinarian, It is best to leave these young animals alone and have mom care for them. (Mom is still the best!) There are some siituations when humans should intervene, like, when mom is sick or injured, etc.
I am looking for a baby bunny pic for my blog. Can I use yours?
If you do not want to, let me know and I will take it out as soon as you notify me.
