My son and I had just moved into a new place. We had come from a less than ideal situation, and I wanted to give him a pet to grow up with, someone to talk to and snuggle with that's wasn't just me. I was set on getting a cat because I'm a full-time student and it didn't seem fair to leave a dog locked up in a crate all day during the week. I was browsing the local shelters when I came across the little furry face of 4 month old Simon (Dear Daniel). He was obviously a Maine Coon mix, and I knew that breed was famous for being kid-friendly. My son and I traveled 60 miles to go meet Simon, and it was love at first sight. After a little time running back and forth from shelter to foster location to shelter again, he was ours. He's an instant member of our family. My son can rough him up and Simon gives back (no claws!) and just lets him do whatever. I'll keep Simon with us for the rest of his life, because he's got a piece of our hearts.
