Black Jack - A Petfinder Happy Tail

Adopted Dog

Adopted from Save A Spot Dalmatian Rescue, Turlock, CA.

In December of 2009, Angels Camp Fire Department Captain and Fire Marshal Nathan Pry and his wife Fire Fighter Teresa Pry adopted a two-year-old Dalmatian from the Save a Spot rescue in Turlock. He was adopted with the intention of becoming a Fire Prevention and Public Education Dog to assist Nathan with his Fire Marshal Duties, and to help spread the message of animal rescue and adoption.

The dog is named Black Jack after the fire station that he works for, Angels Camp Fire Department Station 21. Jack, as he's called for short, has come a long way in his three years of life.

Save a Spot said that Jack had a hard beginning.

His previous owner had gotten their house foreclosed and left him in the backyard when they moved. Feeling sorry for the dog, a neighbor opened the gate and let him loose. Jack wandered the streets until he was picked up by animal control. While at animal control he caught Kennel Cough and was extremely sick. Animal control was going to put him down when Save a Spot saw him and decided to take him in. They nursed him back to health and put him up for adoption.

Even though Jack has been through a lot, he is the one of the most loving animals you will ever meet.

While at work, Jack loves to ride in the fire engines, greet the public, and participate in fire prevention duties. He has perfected his basic obedience, learned to Stop, Drop, and Roll, Get Low and Go, and wave and shake hands. With his flashy spotted coat and cool demeanor, Jack has received a lot of positive feed-back from the public. When children see Jack the loud noises of sirens, bright flashing lights, and people in uniform arent so scary. He is helping them understand that Firefighters are here to help and to not be afraid.

Jack has inspired many of our city's citizens. An elementary school student recently voted Jack a Kindness Hero for his efforts in spreading the message of fire prevention. Jack was awarded a Kindness Hero award at a City Council meeting.

When not at work, Jack lives with Nathan and Teresa and their three year old daughter. He loves to spend his off-duty time playing with the Pry's other dogs, Border Collie Blue-Belle and fellow rescue dog, Redbone Coonhound, Josey.
