Clicker Tip: Simple system helps your clicker work
A little clicker work goes a long way toward helping dogs adjust to kennel life. Many different people can work with the same dogs, if they all click for good behavior. Hang a paper or plastic chart on each kennel door and check off the behaviors you have clicked for: Some examples: Eye contact; quiet (no barking); sit when approached; sit or back away from open door. Target to hand (touch a hand with the nose, through the door). Sit on a verbal cue. Sit for leashing. Go in and out of doors quietly. Add other behaviors for specific dogs. Meanwhile any volunteer can look at the checks, see what the dog has already learned, and see what to work on today. Even without further training, the quiet dog that sits and makes eye contact has a much better chance of being adopted than the dog that barks, bounces off the walls, or ignores visitors.
